Billboard Ancillary

Billboard

1st Draft

This is the first draft to my billboard, the image was desaturated to black and white, which I thought to be fairly boring. However, I really liked the framing of the image so I decided to add colour to the subject by using paint.net and simply drawing on the subject using the paintbrush tool with a low opacity, this allows the colour to be translucent, which is why you can see the detail of the subject.
I think it looks okay for a first draft, but it needs more, as it will be a lot of wasted space otherwise.
The colour on the subject is used to draw all attention as it is the only thing in the image that is in colour. I also coloured in the text for the same reason, the brand name is very important.

2nd Draft

I liked how the first draft looked but like I said, it needed more detail. I had an idea to put my front cover onto my billboard in the empty space, as a way to show what the billboard is selling. Obviously this is not the final draft, but as I haven't finished my front cover just yet, I thought I'd put in this mockup of what I hope it will look like.
I added some more text to the billboard that reads 'ISSUE 1-5 OUT NOW!' as a way to people to pick up the magazine like it is a matter of urgency that they buy this magazine, there is also the same line but blurry on a layer underneath to create a shadow effect so that it pops out and doesn't look flat or blend with the image behind it.
I used the same shadow technique with the brand name and moved it to the top, and above the subject as I felt it needed to be above the subject and above the other less important text, although it could be bigger.

  3rd Draft

Implementation

This is a mock up of what the billboard may look like as a finished product.

  4th Draft

This is the billboard at it's final stage, I have updated the, magazine shown and have used the colour scheme of the Winter edition (orange and white) and changed the text for 'BOARD CULTURE' to solid orange as I felt the image inside the text didn't look as good as I'd hoped.

Feedback

From the feedback we received, I have decided that it would be best for us to completely redesign the website, whilst the content remained almost as it were, although one suggestion was to re-edit the Raw Footage – Clee 2015 video and add some music to it. The video itself was considered to look trashy, but in a good way that fit the style of the magazine and the skateboarding culture.

The background of the website was said to be ‘too plain’ as was the layout, the font was also mentioned, and a suggestion was made to change the Board Culture logo and font, on account of it looking unfitting.

When prompted with the question “What kind of articles would you like/expect to see in a skateboarding magazine?” one of our peers suggested an interview of some kind, perhaps with a local skater or even somebody who formed their business around skate culture. An interview like this might work well with an article about surrounding skate shops and popular skate spots in a regional vicinity.
